During the election of the Speaker on Monday at the Kololo ceremonial grounds, President Museveni expressed displeasure with Ugandans for supporting foreign football at the expense of Ugandan football which he says has increased poverty levels.

“One of my people was inviting me for something called Arsenal- I said what is Arsenal? That it is a European club of football that I don’t know they have done what that I should celebrate -celebrate for what? Your own people are living in poverty and you are meandering around the world in watching other people’s football, I will not tolerate this?
After massive local celebrations for Arsenal premier league title after 22 years, Uganda football fans attributed their passion for foreign football to alleged mismanagement of Ugandan football.
Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr. Lawrence Muganga, who has been appointed the new State Minister for Internal Affairs, says that during the 1990s, Ugandans passionately supported local football because the leaders at the time genuinely cared about the growth of the sport and the country.
“Before you ask me if I support the local teams that we have here, the people who manage our football here, do they love our country so much so that they can position us at the apex of the African continent? Asked Muganga, who before developing love for Arsenal, strongly supported SC Villa locally.

“As long as we are still taking these funds to satisfy ourselves, our stomachs, build different mansions and everything that is as luxurious as you think, then we have a problem that we have not loved our country so much. The money in FUFA should make our Uganda Cranes and every team that represents this country become a success story.
There is a visible loss of passion in Ugandan football in that Arsenal league triumph overshadowed Vipers SC 2025/26 season Uganda premier league crowning for their 8th title.
