Tears rolled over Alfred Ojok in the mixed zone while speaking to Ugandan media shortly after his 2026 Commonwealth Games exit at the Glasgow exhibition center.
By Unanimous decision, the Uganda light heavy boxer lost to Englishman Dimeju Shittu.
After the announcement, a heartbroken Ojok went to his knees for a prayer with teary eyes.
“I really wanted to win this fight and enter the medal bracket. I wanted to win gold and build for my mum. I am so disappointed. I am so sorry mum, I fought hard to win and build for you but I have failed you. I am sorry mama,” Ojok broke into tears.
Before boarding to Glasgow for the games, the government of Uganda promised team Uganda athletes to the games a package of UGX100m for any gold medalist, UGX50m for a silver medal and UGX30m for bronze medal.
This is what inspired most athletes like Ojok to work a little harder to attain the prize at stake. Ojok and the other five boxers will have to take home only the games allowances of USD300 per day amounting to about UGX11m.
Boxing was represented by six boxers, including two girls and all of them fell short of medals.
