More than 2000 runners are expected to take part in the 2026 Gulu City Marathon which will primarily focus on raising HIV and AIDS awareness.
The Run due Saturday, December 5, was launched on Thursday at Sheraton Hotel Kampala.
Held under the theme “Run for Culture, Run for Heritage, Run for Gulu,” the third edition of the marathon will feature 5km (wheelchair), 10km, 12km and 21km races, with participation kits costing UGX 60,000.
Marathon Convener Francis Gimara said that this year’s focus was inspired by findings from last year’s medical camp, where many people turned up for HIV testing, highlighting the need for increased awareness and sensitization.
“Besides promoting HIV prevention, the marathon will also market Gulu as a tourism destination, celebrate the region’s culture and heritage, and encourage healthy living,” she said.
Launching the event, Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister and Laroo-Pece Division MP Norbert Mao described the marathon as a catalyst for change, saying it has boosted Gulu’s image as a peaceful city, attracted investment and visitors, and contributed to community development.
During the launch, last year’s UGX 10 million marathon proceeds were handed over to the Rotary Club of Kampala to support skilling initiatives in Gulu.
Rotary Club of Kampala President Shem Naggenda pledged the club’s continued support in using this year’s proceeds to strengthen HIV and AIDS awareness and community empowerment programmes.
The 2026 Gulu City Marathon aims to combine sport, tourism promotion, cultural heritage and public health to create a lasting impact on the people of Gulu and Northern Uganda.
