Uganda is using the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon to promote the country as a tourism destination, with the government encouraging international runners to stay longer and explore Kasese beyond the race.

Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) Chief Executive Officer Juliana Kagwa says that the government’s involvement in the marathon is aimed at showcasing Uganda’s tourism potential to the world.

“After the marathon doesn’t mean the adventure is over. Take on the trails of the Rwenzori Mountains, experience the wildlife of Queen Elizabeth National Park and explore the landscapes beyond the race route,” Kagwa said.

Kagwa made the remarks while meeting event broadcasters, writers and international runners, including 10 participants from South Africa. She encouraged them to use their time in Uganda to explore more of the country.

The marathon founder Amos Wekesa, says that the increasing number of international runners will benefit the Ugandan economy through spending on accommodation, transport, food and tourism activities.

The 2026 Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon will take place in Kasese on Saturday, August 22, with participants competing in the 42km, 21km, 10km and 5km races.

Organisers expect nearly 10,000 runners from more than 50 countries.

The marathon has also been awarded World Athletics Label Road Race status, making it the first marathon in Uganda to receive the international designation.

The 42km race will start at Kikorongo near the Equator in Queen Elizabeth National Park before heading towards Kasese and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.

The event is increasingly being positioned as a sports tourism platform, with organisers hoping to attract more international visitors to Kasese and other tourist destinations in western Uganda.
