The Tusker Lite Mount Rwenzori Marathon organisers have announced a total prize purse of UGX 252 million for the fifth edition due this Saturday in Kasese.
The marathon winner in the main 42km category UGX 40 million in both men and women while the first and second runners up have Shs25m and Shs10m respectively. There is prize money for all other category winners in the 21km, 10km and 5km races as well as special prize money for special groups including people with disability, oldest participants among others.
The marathon is expected to attract about 8,000 runners, including athletes from 26 countries.
With just days to the Marathon, the Uganda Tourism Board officially launched the countdown to the fifth edition, welcoming international visitors who have arrived in Uganda.
The marathon that started five years ago has grown into one of Uganda’s most important sporting and tourism landmarks, revitalizing the region in business and tourism as visitors return year after year.
The 2026 edition will once again stand as a living testament to the enduring allure of Mountain Rwenzori, fusing the joy of a Ugandan road trip with the rigor of elite competition.
Participation for this year’s marathon is expected to surge from hundreds to thousands of runners representing dozens of countries.
