Gayaza Junior School is set to host Uganda’s top young Scrabble players this Saturday for the inaugural Future Stars–SAU National Schools Scrabble Championship.

The competition expected to attract more than 200 participants from primary and secondary schools across the country will see top performers earn places to Uganda’s team to the 2026 World Youth Scrabble Championship scheduled for August 7–9 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Organisers believe that the championship will provide a major boost to the growth of Scrabble at school level while creating a pathway for young players to compete on the international stage.

The championship that will challenge participants in areas such as vocabulary, strategic thinking and problem-solving is organised by the Future Stars Sports Program in partnership with the Scrabble Association of Uganda (SAU).

Future Stars is a talent development initiative committed to discovering, nurturing and developing young Ugandans in different sporting disciplines.

The programme seeks to create opportunities for talented youngsters to develop their skills and pursue excellence through organised competitions, according to Godwin Murungi, the Scrabble Association of Uganda (SAU) Vice President Technical.

“We are excited about the response from schools and the quality of players expected at the championship. This event will not only identify Uganda’s representatives for the World Youth Scrabble Championship, but will also strengthen the foundation of youth Scrabble in the country,” said Murungi, who expects the large pool of talented participants to make the selection process highly competitive.

Hosts Gayaza Junior School have assured stakeholders of a successful championship.

“Our objective is to provide an environment where students can perform at their best. We have put in place the necessary facilities, equipment and logistical support to ensure a smooth championship,” said Daniel Kasawuli, the school’s Head of Sports and Games.

“We have also put in place all the necessary measures to ensure compliance with the Ebola prevention guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health,” he added.

Schools that have confirmed participation include Gayaza Junior School, Kiira College Butiki, Bishop’s Secondary School, Standard High School, Seroma High School, Good Times Junior School and St. Catherine Junior School, among others.
