Son Heung-min, captain of the South Korea national team and a forward for Tottenham Hotspur, has lodged a criminal complaint in Seoul after allegedly being targeted in a blackmail plot.
Seoul police have detained two suspects – a woman in her 20s and a man in his 40s – on suspicion of extortion, after the woman claimed she was pregnant with Son’s child and demanded a large sum of money.
According to police reports, when the initial attempt failed, an accomplice (the older man) made a follow-up blackmail approach in March, further pressuring the player.
Son’s agency confirmed he is the “clear victim” of an attempted scam and vowed to pursue strong legal action against the individuals involved.
The news emerged just as Son’s club prepares for a major cup final, adding an unwelcome distraction to the star’s season. Tottenham officials declined detailed comment on the ongoing investigation, but reiterated their support for Son.
South Korean authorities, meanwhile, have cautioned against spreading unverified rumors as the case proceeds under privacy laws.
