The Uganda Karate Do Goju Kai Association held its national cadet and junior assessment and grading at the Makerere University karate dojo.

The exercise was overseen by a panel led by UKGA president James Kyewusa, alongside Moses Kiwanuka, James Sekabira, and Makerere dojo head Ronald Mwanje.

The event focused on assessing skill development among young karatekas and assigning new belt ranks based on progress.

Unlike last year, the Programme excluded competition bouts and focused purely on grading, with a larger championship planned for May 2026 for under fourteen athletes.

Organisers reported growing participation, with sixty children assessed this year, up from forty-six in 2025.

The event was an assessment of skill in the Gojukai style and it happens at the start of the year, but after there, there will be competitive events, according to Ronald Mwanje, the head of Karate at the Makerere University.

“Every year, an athlete attains one belt from yellow to blue per year according to his training and skills attained. The grading helps in assessing athletes in preparations for any event,” noted Mwanje.

Officials linked karate training to discipline, focus, and improved academic performance.
