The president of the African Boxing Solomon Desmond Kargbo has extended deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the president of Uganda boxing federation Moses Muhangi and the boxing community of Uganda, and the family of the late Kanabi Alex on the tragic loss of the outstanding boxer and champion.

In a letter dated January 9th, 2026 and signed by himself, Desmond described the death of the Uganda national team boxer as a profound loss not only to Ugandan boxing but to African boxing as a whole.
“He was a talented athlete, a true champion in the ring, and a source of inspiration to many young boxers across the continent. His dedication, discipline, and achievements will remain etched in the history of African boxing. In this moment of grief, we share in your sorrow and stand in solidarity with the Uganda Boxing Federation and the bereaved family. May you find strength, comfort, and courage during this difficult time, and may the soul of the departed rest in eternal peace,” partly read the letter.

After switching from welter to light middleweight division, 2025 was arguably Kanaabi’s best year – winning gold in the national championship to qualify for the champions league where he lifted the title.
In October, Kanaabi made his national team debut during the Africa zone 3 boxing championship in Kenya and returned home with a bronze medal.
Kanaabi was buried on Friday, 9th January, 2026 in Masaka – a day after his death.
