The Hoima City East Division Member of Parliament aspirant and former NBS Sport journalist Jonah Wamaani Byakutaaga believes that the future of Ugandan sports lies in having more sportsmen in Parliament.

The National resistance movement (NRM) party flag bearer says that while current legislators with sports backgrounds have delivered, more voices are needed to close the gaps.

According to Byakutaaga, the current sportsmen in Parliament like the FUFA President Moses Magogo, Geoffrey Kayemba, Asuman Basalirwa and Patrick Opolot Isiagi among others have done a commendable job, including the passing of a new sports law.

He however believes that adding more sports-minded voices in Parliament will fix what is still lacking in the law and funding structure.

Byakutaaga is seeking to represent the constituency, where Hoima City Stadium, one of the venues that will host the AFCON 2027 tournament, is located.

He sees the stadium as a game-changer for the region, and wants residents to look at it beyond a tournament venue, but as an engine for economic and social growth.

Byakutaaga also believes that his shift from journalism to politics was natural, as both fields are about representing people. And despite joining politics, Jonah says he hasn’t left sports journalism behind.

Byakutaaga seeks to displace incumbent Patrick Isingoma Mwesigwa.
