Uganda will make dragon boat history next year as hosts of the first ever Africa Cup.

The event set to attract 16 nations from across the globe is scheduled for 1st to 4th October 2026.

As part of the preparations for this historic event, a delegation from the sport’s international governing body visited the country.

The visiting delegation, which included African Dragon Boat Federation President Ehab Gouda and General Secretary Mary Lai, as well as International Dragon Boat Federation Official Alan Van Chubirah, came to inspect proposed venues, train and certify Ugandan race officials, and meet local stakeholders including NCS, the Chinese Community, Uganda Tourism Board among other agencies.

The Uganda Dragon Boat Federation is looking to bring in six boats from China to add to the four already in the country.

NCS Chairman Tashobya urged the federation to give the sport a national character to comply with the new sports law and be eligible for government funding for events like these.

He also called on the international body to increase material and technical support for Uganda and link the federation with development partners.

“I implore the federation to plan properly, host successfully, and use the event to raise the profile of sport,” noted Tashyobya.

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe, Munyonyo, Ddungu Resort in Mulungu, and Buloba Forest Park are some of the proposed venues to host the event estimated at UGX 1.5bn budget.
