Ten in police custody over rugby player killing

The man believed to be the prime suspect in the killing of Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo has been arrested, Police confirms. Obed Mugwisa was apprehended alongside Joseph Owino, taking the number of suspects arrested to ten.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala says that efforts are ongoing to identify, trace and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the incident.

“We remain committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this criminal act are held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with the law,” Kawala remarked via her X-handle.

Mugwisa is alleged to be the individual seen in widely circulated video footage striking Gongodyo with a wooden plank during the violent attack that led to the rugby star’s death. The footage sparked outrage across the country and intensified calls for swift justice.

The two suspects were arrested on Tuesday, June 9th, 2026 – the same day Gongodyo was burried in Buweri Town Council, Budadiri County of Sironko District.

The former Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates player was laid to rest amid emotional scenes attended by family, friends, teammates, and members of the sporting community.


Police confirmed that the ten suspects have so far been arrested in connection to the mob action.
