The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium construction in Lira City has reached 75 per cent accomplishment, with the contractor projecting progress to surpass 80 per cent by the end of August.
Works are expected to shift to finishing and landscaping ahead of the facility’s planned completion.
During an inspection visit by members of the Lango Parliamentary Group (LPG), SAMCO National Construction Company Project Manager Eng. Mohammed Nazih said that most of the structural works have been completed and attention was now focused on final touches.
With the skeleton works done, we are now doing the final finishing inside the facilities and landscaping. Installation of seats in the main stadium is nearly complete, with only the VIP section remaining,” Nazih said.
He said that works on the main playing surface have hit an advanced stage with hybrid grass to be planted within two weeks.
The construction of auxiliary facilities, including the clubhouse, hostel, swimming pool, training pitch, multi-purpose courts, tennis courts and a mini arena was also progressing well.
The project currently employs about 1,800 workers and remains on schedule for completion in January 2027 under the 20-month contract.
LPG Chairperson and Oyam South MP Patrick Ogwang Obura described the progress as a fulfilled promise to the people of Lango.
He however, raised concerns about inadequate supporting infrastructure, particularly access roads leading to the stadium and training facilities.
“About 18.7 kilometres of access roads leading to Akii-Bua and the surrounding ecosystem have not been catered for. We have also identified challenges with access roads to the training facilities at Lira University which we are taking to parliament and other relevant authorities,” he added.
The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is expected to transform Lira City’s sporting and economic landscape once completed.
