The 2026 Uganda boxing champions league season is set to commence this Saturday at Club Obligato with 27 bouts on the card.

Ahead of the much-anticipated season, the Uganda Boxing Federation has embarked on training boxing coaches and referees in different courses to equip them with necessary skills for the growth of the sport in the country.

According to Sula Kamoga, the Uganda boxing federation Vice President in charge of administration, there are two courses ongoing concurrently.

“We have been having so many courses that have never undergone any course and we thought we should enable them to attend a national course so that we have more professional coaches spread across the country to tap more talents,” he noted.

The four-day course held at TLC in Kamwokya is mainly facilitated by UPDF Boxing club coach Tony Sekabira, a 3-star international boxing association certified coach and Mugagga Moses Bukajumbe, 3-Star Referee and Judge.

“The course is going on well with over 100 coaches in attendance. They are motivated and committed to learning. We are tackling both technical and management aspects and I believe the knowledge shared will be vital for better development of boxers,” noted Sekabira.

Former boxers Owino and Alex Mangen are among those attending. They are grateful to the boxing federation for the course.

“There many things that I was ignorantly doing as a new coach. I think even the boxers should be helped with this knowledge, especially the basic rules of the game,” revealed Owino, who also wants to become a referee.

Participants have also called on boxers to exercise discipline and respect referees’ decisions during fights.

While taking over the federation leadership eight years ago, Moses Muhangi, the Uganda boxing federation president committed to enhancing the federation’s technical ability through training of more coaches and referees to the highest international level – which work remains in progress.
