The Hoima city stadium was officially opened by president Museveni on Wednesday, 24th December, 2025 with a number of festivities that included a friendly match between Kitara FC and KCCA FC.

Kitara FC became the first side to win at the new Hoima City stadium

Isaac Amutuhaire scored the all-important goal that gave Kitara the historic win – as the first football club to win the Hoima City stadium.

Joined from second tier side Kigezi Home Boys in September ahead of the 2025/26 Uganda premier league season, Amutuhairwe entered into the football and national history books as the first player to score in the new Hoima stadium.

The goal that came in the 25th minute was enough to give the Royals a 1-0 win over KCCA FC.

The Hoima city stadium that sits on 34.9 acres of land has been primarily built to host the Afcon 2027 but is likely to become the new home of Kitara FC and other Bunyoro football clubs.

Amutuhairwe’s goal came 5 minutes late from legendary Fred Tamale who scored the first goal at Mandela national stadium Namboole as Express FFC beat Rivals SC Villa 1-0 on 7th February, 1998.

President Museveni officially kicked off the match

Hoima City Stadium, built between 2024 and 2025 at a cost of about USD129–130 million (over UGX 490 billion), features a hybrid grass pitch that meets FIFA and CAF standards.

The wider complex includes among others a 2,000-seat indoor arena, training pitches, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, outdoor courts, a fully equipped gym, offices, media facilities and parking for more than 1,000 vehicles.
