Mourners cry for justice as Gongodya’s body arrives in Sironko

The body of the late Sydney Gongodyo arrived at his ancestral home in Budadiri, Sironko district for vigil on Monday, 8th June, 2026 a day after prayers at the Kings Park arena in Bweyogerere. The former Stanbic Black Pirates and Rugby Cranes player who passed away at Mulago hospital after a mob attack will be laid to rest on Tuesday, 9th June 2026.

In a video circulating on social media, the incapacitated late Sydney Gongodya is seen pleading to an angry mob that was ending his life -accusing him of snatching a woman’s handbag.

The funeral service was filled with emotional tributes and condolences by members of his family, friends, teammates and the police.

According to Police, three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of the former Stanbic Black Pirates and Rugby Cranes player killed by the mob on Friday, 5th June 2026.

The suspects, two males and two females are being kept at Kira Police as investigations continue.

Gongodyo who played as a forward succumbed to injuries at Mulago hospital aged 27 where police had rushed him after intervention. 

At the arrival of Gongodya’s body at his ancestral home, mourners asked for justice to be availed. 

Gongodya who is survived by two young children was expected to be a part of Stanbic Black Pirates Uganda Cup fixture against Heathens which was postponed after his death.
