The state minister for sports Peter Ogwang has raised concern over inadequate accommodation facilities in Hoima, saying that the region is taking a long time to improve their hotel rooms as well as increasing the number of rooms needed for AFCON 2027.
The tournament requires four-star and five-star hotels but of the 20,000 standard rooms needed, only 200 are available.
After an inspection, shortly after presiding over the 2026 National basketball league me final at the Hoima stadium arena, Ogwang noted with concern, that the VIP guests who visit Hoima leave complaining about the accommodation standards since most of the available choices do not meet standards.
“If the region cannot accommodate the fewer numbers coming for inspection, how about the AFCON peak that will see a huge number of national and international guests coming to the region?”
He challenged the hotel industry to up the efforts and improve their rooms ahead of the next CAF inspection.
Hoima city mayor Edward Isingoma says that they are working with key stakeholders, especially hotel owners to improve accommodation, noting that the government has already earmarked UGX50bn to support Hotels in Bunyoro.
The AFCON organizing committee earmarked ten hotels in Bunyoro with seven in Hoima while three are in Masindi district. Government earmarked UGX102bn as a grant for hotel owners improvement.
