The National Novice Boxing Championships are currently underway, starting at the regional level.
This year’s championships are unique because they have been held in different regions of the country as part of an effort to further identify and nurture new boxing talent.
Following the new Sports Act, which requires sports federations to take sporting activities to all regions of the country, the Uganda Boxing Federation responded by taking up the challenge.
The federation has now started organizing the Novice championships at the regional level in an effort to discover new talent.
“The federation is also giving out boxing rings to each region to further engage the boxers actively,” confirmed Sula Kamoga, the Uganda boxing federation vice president.
The first championships were held in the city of Gulu, where 16 clubs participated, with Arua Boxing Club and Lango boxing club finsihing joint top.
Other championships arebeing held in Jinja in the east, Mbarara in the west, as well as Kawaala in the central part of the country.
Organizers, boxers and coaches say holding these championships right from the grassroots level will help identify new talent that will eventually strengthen the national team.
The boxers who emerge victorious in each region will go on to compete in the national championships, which are expected to be held at Hamz Nakivubo Stadium.
