It’s the kind of announcement that it rewrites a continent’s story.

After nearly four decades away, Formula One is officially returning to African soil. The FIA and Formula One Group confirmed a historic agreement and Rwanda will be the proud new home of the African Grand Prix, with the first races roaring off the start line in the early 2030s.

The centerpiece of this ambitious project is a brand-new, world-class circuit to be built in Bugesera — a region defined by its rolling green hills and rapidly developing infrastructure.

For motorsport fans across Africa, this is personal. No longer will watching a Grand Prix mean saving for air tickets and long journeys. The world’s fastest, most glamorous sport is coming home — within reach of millions who have waited patiently to witness it in person.

“The return of the FIA Formula One World Championship to Africa is a historic moment for our sport,” Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President revealed.

For Rwanda, the significance goes far beyond race weekend. It opens a thrilling new chapter in tourism, international investment, and global profile. When the cameras go live, millions around the world won’t just see cars racing — they’ll see a nation, a region, and a continent moving forward at full speed.

“Today belongs to Africa,” remarked Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda.

There’s still a journey ahead: construction, testing, fine-tuning, and exact dates to lock in. But the destination is clear.

“Africa is home to more than 100 million Formula 1 fans — we are bringing our sport closer to millions who have waited a long time,” noted Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.

It’ll be a whole new era for African motorsport.
