University Football League defending champions Muteesa I Royal University have named former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje as their new head coach.
Mawejje replaces George William Ssengabi, who departed the university after leading the team to its first-ever University Football League title.
Mawejje takes charge with the challenge of defending the crown and building on the success achieved under Ssengabi.
“I want to assure you that I am here for business. I played football and I have studied it. I promise to take the team to the next level,” Mawejje assured fans.
He brings experience from his playing career, including his time with the Uganda Cranes, as he begins a new chapter in coaching.
Muteesa 1 Royal University clinched their maiden trophy in the competition since inception after overcoming YMCA Comprehensive Institute with a hard fought 1-0 victory during the well attended finale at the Hamz stadium on 2nd May 2026.
