Uganda Development Bank (UDB) has committed Shs20m to the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, returning as a sponsor of the fifth edition scheduled for 22 August 2026 in Kasese.

The commitment was announced on Tuesday at a press conference in Kampala, attended by UDB Managing Director Patricia Ojangole and the marathon’s leadership.

The marathon brings together sport, tourism, community and enterprise in one of Uganda’s most scenic destinations. This year’s event features the 42.2 km marathon, 21 km half marathon, 10 km and 5 km runs, with the 42 km route starting at the Equator in Queen Elizabeth National Park and all distances finishing at the Marathon Arena in Kasese, beneath the Rwenzori Mountains.

UDB Managing Director Patricia Ojangole said that as a development Finance Institution, they recognise tourism as a key driver of Uganda’s economic growth — creating jobs, supporting local enterprises, attracting visitors and showcasing the country’s rich natural and cultural heritage.

“Our sponsorship reflects a broader commitment to growing Ugandan brands, promoting local destinations and backing initiatives that contribute to the country’s inclusive socio-economic development,” she noted.

Marathon founder Amos Wekesa welcomed the partnership.

“UDB backing a Ugandan event, run by Ugandans, for the benefit of a Ugandan town, is exactly the kind of support that helps us grow this race year after year,” he said.

Since earning World Athletics Label status, the race has drawn visitors to the Rwenzori region, created opportunities for local businesses, hotels, guides and transport providers, and helped establish Kasese as a tourism destination.
