Buganda kingdom reveals plans to develop Wankulukuku stadium

Buganda kingdom has revealed plans to develop Muteesa II stadium, Wankulukuku into a modern stadium. 

This was unveiled by the Kingdom Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga on Tuesday at Bulange in Mengo during a media briefing as he marked 13 years of being the kingdom’s Katikkiro.

According to Mayiga, Kabaka (King) wants the facility to be developed to the desired standards and efforts are already underway.

“Kabaka wants us to develop Wankulukuku stadium. It has a management committee that is led by Kabaka’s sister (Naalinya). We are going to recruit a formidable, professional and experienced CEO to run a secretariat that we are about to set up to run the facility,” noted Mayiga.

“The arrangement was in place even before the abolishment of the kingdoms. The arrangement was from Sweden. But now, there are even encroachers on the land which we have to srot but indeed the stadium needs to be developed to the desired standard,” he added.

Wnakulukuku stadium has been the home of most of the kingdom’s sports activities, hosting Bika and Masaza football tournament opening and closing ceremonies.

It has also been home to Express FC and some other clubs that have occasionally hosted from the facility.

Away from sports, the stadium has also hosted business and music events.
