The continuous call to lift the suspension of boxing in schools is getting louder with many student boxers decrying the missed scholarship through their boxing talents.

Kasasa trains at school

Among the lucky few, who have benefitted from their sweat is Isaac Kasasa, who secured a scholarship at Entebbe senior secondary school after his impressive performances in the Uganda boxing champions league.

“They welcomed me because they saw me on TV and they promised me that if I won two fights, they would give me a bursary which I did and I got the bursary,” noted Kasasa.

Ahead of his next fight scheduled for this Saturday, October 18th at Club Obligato in Kampala, Kasasa took his preparations at school for inspiration.

There was an exchange of words during the weigh-in

Surrounded by cheering students, the senior five student uses the school compound to have his simple drills before hitting the gym at Katabi boxing club after school.

He has set a goal to stay in school and finish his education while chasing his boxing dreams.

“I would like to thank my school because they give me time to do both. I train very early in the morning before going to school and also train after classes,” he explained.

While some people still see boxing as a violent sport, Kasasa earned his scholarship from the boxing talent and has no regrets over decision to take up boxing.

Even though boxers are often thought to be undisciplined, Nanyondo Annet, the school’s Disciplinary Prefect, praised Kasasa for being respectful, focused, and a role model to others.

“He is very disciplined at school and I am very happy for him,” she noted.

Kasasa takes on Nerrick Tumusiime, another student from Kololo High in the next main fight of the boxing champions league season four.

The two boxers together with others underwent the medical checkup and weigh-in on Friday and Kasasa’s school-mates await for nothing less than victory from this battle of students.

Over 20 bouts are lined up on the fight night which is broadcast live on NBS Sport and the Afromobile.
