Lira golf club is looking forward to expansion to 18 holes with an ambition to host the Uganda Open. The club situated 360kms from Kampala has the flagship golf course in the Northern part of the country.
Founded in 1955 by the British as a sports club in Northern Uganda, the club earlier had various sports activities golf, basketball, tennis and swimming.
However due to wars and unrest within the country between 1971-1986, most of the facilities were bombed and destroyed-at the time.
Land was invaded by the public and the sports club no longer existed. But after the wars, some of the members who returned from exile embarked on reviving the sports club.

The golf course hosts various events and recently it held the Lira ladies open. Jennifer Opiyo, the Lira golf club Ladies Captain says that the aadministrators are looking forward to expansion of the course to 18 to host the Uganda Open and other major events.
“The club started a recruitment program to have more members of the Lango community into golf for continuity,” she noted.
Despite the club revival, challenges of vandalism, limited space to revive the other sports facilities that existed before and low membership are still a hurdle, according to Johnson Chol, the Board of Trustees Vice Chairman.
The Lira Sports and Golf Club beckons golfers with a unique 9-hole course that offers a delightful challenge.
