Speaking to the team and staff on Monday, 22nd September, 2025, Sserunjogi noted it is a decision that has been very painful as an open secret.

“We are going to participate in the league and we are going to participate in the new format. It is a decision that has been very painful.

We are entering into something that we are also going to learn. However, it is coming along with a very serious challenge. It will be disastrous for us having embraced the league format and we become victims of the same league format,” he noted.

The Lord Mayor who is also the club patron Erias Lukwago predicted a very tough season for his side.

“They know my reservations with the new format and I had issues with the decision that we took as a club. I had a totally different opinion. But with collective responsibility, I had no choice. And now we are going into it knowing the intricacies with it,” noted Lukwago.

Despite the uproar, FUFA believes that the reforms are the better. Among other positives, each UPL club is required to submit the details of the 25 players to be covered by the insurance policy instituted by the federation.

The prize money for the 2025/26 season as part of the reforms has been increased to 532m UGX, there will be prize money for the Man of the match chosen by a panel of technocrats for each of the 268 matches to be played, winning bonus for each of the 30 persons submitted as the matchday list before the match for the team that wins each of Round-2 and Round-3 matches, each UPL club will receive a financial support of UGX 80 million for the 2025/6 Season and Shs25m has already been extended to the clubs.

The new format will see the Uganda premier league played in three rounds, starting this Friday.
