As Uganda continues to mourn the death of former Uganda Cranes captain Polly Ouma who was buried on Saturday, 3rd January, 2025, in Masafu-Lumino, Busia district, another legend of the famous 1978 squad that reached the Afcon final before losing to Ghana 2-0 in the final is living on a death bed.

Abbey Nasur was warded with lifetime achievement award during the Real Stars monthly awards in September 2025

Abbey Nasur, the former Prisons star who won Uganda three Cecafa titles and featured for Uganda Cranes in 1974 and 1978 Afcon finals, lives in Naguru Remand II cell in Nakawa Division surrounded by stinking gutters and poor housing units.

After paying a courtesy visit to the 73-year old, Nakawa Division mayor Paul Mugambe, through a social media post, called upon government, FUFA and well-wishers to come to Nasur’s rescue who has no hope of medication despite lifting the Ugandan flag high and remaining a popular figure in Ugandan football.

“This football legend of ours is now confined in a wheelchair with painful knees and feet. He can only afford a weak smile. I call upon well-wishers, government, FUFA, corporate companies to come and support Nasur. He has no help, no medication and basic care. Let us celebrate him when he is alive rather than waiting for his death and send huge sums in condolences,” noted the mayor, who is known for his sports philanthropy.

Abbey Nasur Muteguya played for Young Salumbey, Naguru Youth, Prisons FC, Maragoli FC and Gor Mahia Football in Kenya.

He then coached several clubs in Uganda and Kenya (Coffee Board of Kenya, Metal Box, Stima, Impala Aliwatanya and Gor Mahia. In Uganda he coached KCC and Maji FC.
