Government is set to undertake investigations after Uganda’s dismal display at the just concluded 2025 World athletics championships in Tokyo, Japan. Uganda returned from the home without a single medal despite fielding a team of 21 prospective and experienced runners.
It was also an unimpressive outing for the State minister for sports Hon. Peter Ogwang who was with the National council of sports General secretary Dr. Bernard Ogwel in Tokyo.

During Ogwang’s tenure, athletics has brought medals at every competition whilst national and international record getting broken.
“This is unbelievable and we have reports of ill preparation along with poor motivation of athletes as the lead factors to the poor performance. We need to support the athletes for them to attain good results,” a source close to the minister revealed.
“The minister will establish a team to meet key stakeholders and athletes. He will also meet the athletes personally on a fact-finding mission,” the source added.

There have also been allegations of sexual harassment within the sport. But most recent factor is the wrong business that has entered the fraternity.
“The minister should investigate why some athletes are left despite being medal favorites. The sexual harassments should be investigated. The athletics officials and coaches entered into a business of sporting young athletes and connect them to international management agencies on commission basis. This is why every teenage runner has an international management – which focuses about money and not the national pride,” a source with Uganda athletics told this website on request of anonymity.
It is fourth time the Pearl of Africa return empty handed from the competition after 1983, 2009 and 2011.
Uganda won one medal from the 3-13 competition, one bronze from the 2025 competition, one silver from the 2017 competition, two gold medals from the 2019 edition and three medals from the 2022 edition including one gold and two bronze.
