Sports enthusiasts have joined the people of Tooro in grieving the death of the Omukama of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba, who passed away in the early hours of Friday.
Omukama was actively involved in several sports and was also a passionate supporter of Arsenal Football Club.
Meanwhile, the national football governing body, FUFA, has announced that there will be a moment of silence during the country’s top-flight league to honour the late king, lasting one week.
The late Omukama of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru, was a great sports enthusiast who participated in various sporting activities.
He was particularly involved in football, from the Tooro regional level all the way to the national level.
According to a statement released by FUFA, the Omukama will be remembered for supporting the Uganda Cranes, the FUFA Drum competition, and for helping FUFA promote and develop football in Tooro.
It is on this basis that FUFA has announced a moment of silence during the country’s top-flight league, which kicks off this weekend, for a period of one week.
Away from Ugandan football, Omukama was also a supporter of Arsenal in England, and on many occasions whenever he appeared in public, he was seen wearing an Arsenal jersey.
The late king was also passionate about other sports, including cycling, motorsport, golf and several others.
The Omukama also played a major role in attracting government, sponsors and investors to promote the development of sports in the Kingdom of Tooro.
For sports enthusiasts, his most recent public appearance was at the Ntale League final, a competition involving former students of Ntale High School.
At the age of 34, Omukama passed away in the United States in the early hours of Friday, leaving the Kingdom of Tooro and Uganda at large in mourning.
