In a bid to promote the sport of Boxing, Busoga Kingdom has launched a boxing competition. The kingdom sports minister, Amin Bbosa Nkono, revealed that the move intends to revive the sport of Boxing in the Kingdom and the entire eastern region.
The inaugural Busoga Boxing Championship will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Kyabazinga Stadium Bugembe.

The day will start with a weigh-in to set the stage for the highly anticipated boxing matches.
Boxers will register and compete in their respective boxing clubs all over Busoga Kingdom and registration is free.
“We are going to revive boxing in Busoga kingdom. Remember, we had started it five years ago but due to unavoidable circumstances, we stopped it somewhere but we are now determined starting march 7,” noted Bbosa. “This was supposed to be last year, so the edition of 2026 will take place in November this year and I call upon the people of Busoga to come and watch as well support the talents of Busoga,” he added.

The Chairperson of the organising Committee Gilbert Mitala says the Categories shall include Juniors (girls and boys), Youths (boys and girls) and Elite (boys and girls)
“I know the talents that have been hidden behind will come out. This will help out youths that are idle to join the sport. Boxing is a game of discipline and if you are indisciplined, you cannot be part of boxing,” he noted.
The winning clubs will be presented with trophies and accolades for the outstanding individual boxers.
Different stakeholders in the Boxing Sport have applauded Busoga Kingdom for this initiative which they say shall promote talent and revive Boxing in Busoga and eastern Uganda as a whole
Edward Kijju, the Kakira Boxing Club manager and Omera Jamil Oketcho, the 256 Iganga Boxing Club coach believe that the Busoga boxing championship is a great platform to the region’s raw boxing talents.
Phiona Naigaga, a boxer with 256 Iganga boxing club, is confident that such competitions will help them dominate other parts of the country and have representation at the national team.
